A Quick Visit to Dempsey Hill

If you are based in Singapore, never miss out a chance to visit Dempsey Hill. What’s in Dempsey Hill? Well, it’s still another one of those Singaporean posh areas with bars, restaurants, a place to chill and hangout, a couple of ‘antique’ shops and a local expat deli. The crowd is a mix of the ‘upperclass’ locals and the white Expats. Usually best to ‘drive’ going to this place as the nearest MRT stations are not that near. šŸ˜›

We saw quite a few interesting shops here that tickled my fancy. There is Huber’s Butchery and Bistro which I consider my LV and Prada store (FYI: I don’t like shopping and I was never interested in designer labels but I do LOVE going to grocery stores and these type of shops). Another is the Oktober Munich which serves all you can drink beer for S$19.90 for an hour and their wines can be really cheap at happy hour at S$6++ and they serve (gasp!) avocado milkshake! And then there’s Jones The Grocer which, from what I’ve read, is a great brunch place. I’ve been wanting to visit the place because of its good rep and when I was there (to look and not to dine) it didn’t fall short of my expectations. It’s a shop and a restaurant in one. Only one thing turned me off, it’s quite pricey. There’s the House at Dempsey in block 8A, which ambiance-wise is great but service and food-wise undesirable. They do have a good Fries-tastic menu but when we went there, their kitchen is closed for the afternoon and we can only order desserts and drinks which we did and it wasn’t that remarkable. And then finally, the Margarita’s where we had our dinner and three pitchers of lime daiquiri (they have the bragging rights to this) . I don’t really know my Mexican so I just ordered something on the menu that didn’t sound too foreign but our friend Ollie always orders the best Mexican dish (had dinner withe the guy twice in a mexican restaurant and he always orders the same thing: that beef thingy, with sides, which you wrap in a fajita). Fantastic. The staff were a bit unfriendly though considering they’re kababayan.

And then there’s White Rabbit which is a good place for Sunday Brunches. G and I tried to go there sometime last year but never had the chance to dine because apparently they close at 3pm on sundays and opens again at 6pm or so. Bummer.

Anyway, it’s always worth a visit to this place a (re)discover something ‘new’ in Singapore.
